Joey slowly quickly wiped the counter before Jack finished with the dishes he had been doing in the kitchen. She had successfully avoided any contact with him for the past three days, but the fact that she had to see him at work didn’t help. She wanted to finish up, and then she could make up a lame excuse about having a test to study for and get out before he could call her on her avoidance.

She breathed in deeply as the last customer got up to leave.

“I’m outta here Jack. I have a potential pop quiz in the morning, and I need to study,” she called into the kitchen, trying to get out before he had a chance to call back.

Too late.

“Joey wait. I was,” he paused walking out of the kitchen, “I was hoping we could talk.”

“Can’t it wait Jack? I mean I have to stu-” he cut her off.

“You said that,” he said, looking at her with soft eyes, “but I’m afraid if we wait we’ll never talk.”

Joey just nodded slowly, walking back towards him.

“Okay then. Lets talk. Anything in mind?”

Somehow she hoped he was going to go the small talk route, but she knew that wasn’t going to happen. There was too much they needed to get out.

“I think you know what I have in mind,” he said, walking closer to the counter, where Joey was now seated in a stool.

“Look Jack, I know that you think something is happening with us. And I don’t know…You may be right, but right now…”

“What?” he asked softly. He was trying really hard to understand why she was avoiding him, and why she was so against anything happening between them. But he couldn’t. There was something between them. Something stronger than friendship. And he didn’t know how she could deny that.

“I just broke up with Dawson. And I know as an outsider, you don’t know what that means, but it’s a big thing. My whole life its been Dawson and Joey. Its been a constant roller coaster of do they really love each other? When will they admit it? Who says it first? And now its like, a whole part of my life is over…” she paused, looking down, “Its just a little bit overwhelming. So please forgive me if I don’t come running into your arms as soon as I’m free.”

“I’m sorry Joey,” he said, looking down, “I guess I just didn’t think you and Dawson breaking up meant that you avoided me at all costs. And forgive me if I just can’t forget that I like you…A lot. But I can’t. So you can avoid me, and you can turn me down,” he paused, “but I’m not going anywhere. Because I know that I haven’t known you long, and I know that I don’t know anything about your past, but I know that you Joey Potter, are the most amazing person I have ever met. Don’t expect me to stop thinking that because you aren’t ready to move on.”

“Jack…” she said softly. But nothing would come out. Joey Potter was speechless.

“Look, I know you are probably going to tell me its best if I don’t work here, and maybe I should look for another job, but I just,” he paused and looked down at his feet, “I like you Joey. A lot. And nothing is going to change that. Not all the avoidance in the world.”

“I know,” she said, almost in a whisper, “But you just have to understand where I am coming from Jack. There is a lot more to it than whether you like me or I like you. I just…Ever since that night, the night of the full moon, I haven’t been able to think straight. I don’t know what or who I want anymore. So, you have to understand. I need time.”

Jack nodded slowly.

“Then time you have Joey. I’m not going to pressure you. You know that. But like I said, I am not going anywhere.”

“I know,” she nodded, as he began to walk back into the kitchen to finish the dishes that had piled up through the night “Jack?”

“Yeah Joey?” he said, turning to look at her.

“What makes you think I’m even worth it?”

“I just know,” he smiled.

She nodded once more, “Can you lock up?”

“Yeah Joey, of course,” he nodded, “Bye Jo.”

“Night Jack,” she said walking out of the Icehouse.

Awesome job.
